Conflict in Ukraine and its Impact on Ukraine Agriculture

  • Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner 1200 Main Street, 38th Floor Kansas City, MO 64105 (map)

Members & Colleagues:

We have had an opportunity develop to hear from a leading expert on Ukraine agriculture on the impact of the Russian invasion and invite you to join us for this discussion.

Our guest is Roman Grynyshyn who is well-known in Midwest agriculture circles in his role as CEO of Travelite MICE & Travel Ukraine which organizes agri-business tours for Ukrainian farmers in North America. Roman, who is an educator by training, began the farmer-to-farmer program funded by USAID in the Ukraine in 2007. When funding for that program ended, he started his own business which today organizes agricultural events worldwide, provides on-line coursework, and conducts ag-oriented tours.

In a recent note to us, he describes the situation in the following manner:

Since the war started, we have noticed that there is a stratum of the rural society of Ukraine, which has suffered a lot of damage from the Russian invasion, but they don’t have a possibility to rebuild themselves and there are no programs to support them. These are the small family farms, who produce some amounts of various crops to feed their families and to sell something to the market. According to official statistics they supply about 30% of agricultural produce to the total volume nationwide. According to general observations about every 10th village family has suffered damage in Kyiv Oblast to the north from Kyiv.

We expect Roman’s remarks to cover:

  • agricultural industry in Ukraine before February 24th;

  • the challenges and issues Ukraine has in the industry during the war;

  • and initiatives underway to re-build the agricultural sector.

Lastly, we thank former Council Chairman Robert Thompson and his colleagues at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner for hosting this event in their conference room. Best regards.

Bob Petersen
Executive Director
Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City
